Druid Hills

Just northeast of downtown atlanta is one of Atlanta's most beautiful and affluent neighborhoods that is known as Druid Hills. It was the innovation of Atlanta developer Joel Hurt who hired Frederick Law Olmstead to design an "ideal residential suburb" on 1,400 acres. Olmstead began the design work in 1893 after Central Park, the U.S. Capitol grounds, Stanford University and Riverside, Illinois. Riverside was the model on which Druid Hills was based because it was a beautiful scenic environment with plenty of open space, curving streets, and transitional public and private areas filled with trees and flowers—a new concept in city planning! Olmstead wanted Druid Hills homeowners to come home after a day of work and pass through parks and a pleasing rural or at least semi-rural character of scenery.

Still today, curvy, winding roads circle around the Tudor, Georgian and Traditional two-story style architecture. Many of these elegant mansions are situated on large gently sloped lots, rolling hills and meadows, surrounded by aged oaks, magnolias and dogwoods. The homes and gardens are on display during the annual home and garden tour.

The community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to several outstanding homes. One such home is Callanwolde which was built in 1920 for Coca-Cola heir Charles Howard Candler. Today it serves as the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center which offers classes in everything from creative writing to Tai Chi.

Druid Hills is located within walking distance to Emory University close to downtown Atlanta. The Druid Hills Golf Club, Fernbank Museum and its IMAX theatre, and Emory University are all convenient to the residents and provide shopping, dining and cultural events.
